Tucked away in the Bavarian Alps, near the Austrian border, lies the breathtakingly beautiful Konigssee. This picturesque natural lake, situated close to the charming township of Berchtesgaden, is a haven for tourists seeking an unforgettable experience. The lake’s emerald-green waters, surrounded by towering mountains, including the majestic Jenner and Watzmann, create a surreal landscape that will leave you spellbound.
Located within the municipality of Schonau am Konigssee, Konigssee is often likened to a fjord, due to its unique geography. The lake’s name, meaning “King’s Lake”; is a testament to its majesty. As the third deepest lake in Germany, with a depth of 190 meters, Konigssee is also renowned for its exceptional water clarity (lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world whereas Blue Lake in New Zealand is known to be the clearest in the world).
So let us go and experience the enchantment of Konigssee, a true natural wonder that will transport you to a world of serenity and beauty.
Major Attractions
We love Bavaria because of its stunning lakes, snow-capped mountains, excellent transport system and delicious cuisine and we travel to this region at an interval of two to three years. While touring Salzburg last year we decided to visit Berchtesgaden once more. Other than lake Konigssee, famous Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle’s nest), National park and castle were also on our agenda which need a separate article.
Our journey through the picture-perfect Alpine valley culminated in the charming Berchtesgaden township. We strolled along its narrow streets, lined with quaint cafés and shops, and indulged in mouth-watering cookies and hazelnut coffee at a tiny pastry shop.
Next, we made our way to the lake for a serene boat ride to the peninsula, departing from Seelande station. As we embarked on a beautiful motorboat, we were treated to a visual feast of breath taking surroundings. Notably, only electric-powered passenger boats, paddle boats, and rowing boats are permitted on the lake, preserving its pristine environment.
Our two-hour boat ride took us to St. Bartholomew’s Church and Salet, with the option to disembark and catch a later boat. The majestic scenery was enhanced by the surrounding sheer rock walls, creating a truly awe-inspiring experience. A highlight of the ride was when a crew member played a trumpet at a designated spot, producing a mesmerizing echo that has been a tradition since 1909.
As we reached the western shore, we were struck by the stunning location and marvellous architecture of St. Bartholomew’s Church, nestled at the base of Germany’s second-highest peak, Watzmann (Zugspitze is the highest peak). The church’s picturesque setting, combined with the lake’s pristine environment, created a magical atmosphere.
We took a break for lunch at a traditional restaurant, where we savoured succulent Bratwurst and delicious Dunkle Weiss beer, surrounded by a cozy ambiance.
Rejuvenated, we boarded another boat to Salet, taking in the breath taking views of the smaller Obersee lake, separated from Konigssee by rocky moraines, and the majestic Rothbach waterfall.
At the end I would like to clear one confusing point that there is another Konigsee (check the spelling here) which is a municipality in Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, close to Erfurt.
Popular Activities
Other than boating or rowing, swimming is also very rejuvenating during summer but lake temperature rarely goes beyond 20 degree Celsius.
Hiking and trekking to nearby mountains and venturing in to the Berchtesgaden national park are also popular during summer.
Skiing too attracts many winter sports enthusiasts.
Trip to Eagle’s nest and visit to the castle are also extremely popular.
When to Visit
Middle of April to Middle of October for regular tourists and December to March for winter sports.
Local Cuisine
German sausages with senf (mustard), sauerbraten, schnitzels and dessert like Apfel strudel are delicious. Beers need a separate article to discuss, but German Weissbier (wheat beer) is my favourite beer always.
