If you want to experience traditional Greek cuisine and at the same time wish to unwind, relax and rejuvenate in a tranquil atmosphere, then Saronic islands are must visit destinations for you.
Though it is hard to choose a perfect gateway from 227 inhabited Greek islands (more than 6000 totally), but it is not difficult to settle down for most famous ones like Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Corfu or Rhodes.
However, Saronic islands are very popular among tourists and locals alike.
These islands have distinct advantages as they are in Saronic gulf adjacent to Athens and southern Greek coastline. You can reach them in one to one and half hour ferry ride from Athens . One is really spoiled for choices as regular ferry, hydrofoils, private speed boats and day cruises with catamarans are available almost throughout the year as Saronic gulf is sheltered from the strong wind force, thus ferry services are operational uninterrupted.
Greece has two large islands namely Crete and Euboea(Evia) and six groups of islands of diverse geographical wonders and cultural influences. These island archipelagos are known as Saronic, Sporades, Cyclades, Ionian, North Aegean and Dodecanese islands.
Saronic islands are picturesque group of islands and famous for their crystal clear water, ancient ruins, charming waterfront promenade and beautiful harbour. One can hike, swim, snorkel, kayak, explore local delicacies or walk on the narrow cobblestoned streets in all these islands .
About six Saronic islands are famous and they are Salamina, Aegina, Hydra, Poros, Spetses and Agistri. They are ideal for one or two days holidays or for short day trips.
Half day or full day cruises offering various island destination combos are there to choose from Athens and we selected one full day cruise with lunch for three popular islands.
Our cruise boat was very nice, well decorated double decked boat with plenty of sun decks, air conditioned lounges, well stocked bar and cafeteria and nice smiling crew.
We had reported at 8-30 am and boat departed from Piraeus port (Athens also has two smaller ports Rafina and Lavrio) at 9 am. Bright sunny day it was and we were delighted to be on the deck with cups of coffee in hand, busy in clicking pictures of beautiful surroundings.
Our first port of call was unique and charming island Hydra. It is famous as it is car free.
Water taxis and donkeys are major modes of transport. We were given one and half hour time to enjoy this island and we passed our time walking and exploring its beautifully preserved venetian style buildings, museum and lovely waterfront. We had a locally made pastry which was so delicious that we forgot how many pieces each of us devoured.
Next stop was charming Poros and we were amazed by the sheer beauty of its magnificent historic clock tower situated on island’s highest hill.
It was visible from far away as our vessel was approaching the island. Made in 1463 this tower offers stunning views of surrounding sea and small islands.
We were given only 45 minutes on this lush green island covered with pine trees, so we wandered through the narrow streets and spent time shopping souvenirs in small shops situated at its waterfront.
Back to the boat and it was lunch time. Menu was really nice and complete with dessert, soft drinks and tea or coffee. After a delicious meal in air conditioned cabin, we took little nap before reaching our final destination Aegina.
Aegina is the largest of the three islands (largest Saronic island is Salamina) and has all lovely touristic features like boutique hotels, pebbled beaches, night bars, tavernas and historical monuments. Its scenic coastline, secluded beaches like Kolona, picturesque coves and pine forests make this an enchanting island. We were given 2 hours time and we loved walking on its cobblestoned streets and managed a short 15 minutes swim at one of the beaches.
At Aegina you get one of the best pistachios of the world and roasted ones are divine to taste. We purchased lots of them along with locally made nougats and chocolates.
We could not visit famous temple of Aphea which is situated at the top of a pine covered hill offering breath-taking views of surrounding places. From this point, Temple of Poseidon at Sounion and Parthenon at Acropolis of Athens can be seen on a clear sky and they form a holy triangle. It was 6 pm and time to return to Athens.
While returning, we had the luxury of having visual pleasure of watching setting Sun over Aegean Sea and wonderful play of colours on the sky above. We touched the port at 7-30 pm.
Unforgettable, yes that is the only word which suits this particular excursion. Tranquil moments, lovely sceneries and great experiences remained sculpted in our memories forever.
Best time to visit
Mid-April to Mid-September as water is perfect for swimming.
