During our recent visit to Houston, Texas, my uncle suggested a short trip to San Antonio, and we were intrigued. “Why San Antonio?” we asked. His response was enthusiastic: “The city boasts a rich history, numerous tourist attractions, including museums, art centres, and amusement parks.” With over 20 million tourists visiting annually, San Antonio offers a plethora of exciting experiences.
Some of the top attractions include:
- The Alamo: A historic mission and symbol of Texas’s fight for independence.
- River Walk: A charming network of walkways along the San Antonio River.
- Tower of the Americas: A 750-foot-tall observation tower with breath taking views.
- San Antonio Zoo and Aquatic Park: A popular attraction for families and animal lovers.
- Historic Market Square (El Mercado): A vibrant Mexican market filled with culture, food, and shopping.
- McNay Art Museum: A modern art museum featuring an impressive collection.
We were also curious about the local cuisine. Our aunt assured us that San Antonio offers the best of Tex-Mex, including Texas BBQ at Franklin Barbecue, authentic Mexican cuisine at Casa Rio or La Gloria, and the famous decadent chocolate cake at King’s College Cake. With that, our decision was made – “Let’s go!”
San Antonio:
San Antonio is situated in south-central Texas, approximately 75 miles southwest of Austin (Capital city of Texas) and 150 miles from the Mexico-US border. Beyond tourism the city boasts of:
- Military – several major military bases are based in San Antonio.
- Healthcare The city is hub for medical research and healthcare.
- Technology and Manufacturing.
- Education – It is home to several institutions of higher learning.
- Cultural festivals – The city celebrates its diverse heritage with various festivals throughout the year.
Our Journey:
A smooth 4-hour drive from Houston brought us to our hotel Hilton Palacio del Rio, situated on the riverside at downtown San Antonio.
Our first venture was the famous River Walk which was conveniently located just outside the hotel.
Major Attractions:
1. River Walk:
The River Walk is an amazing 15-mile long network of walkways along the San Antonio river lined with restaurants, pubs, bars, shops and many other attractions. It stretches over a mile in the downtown area and is the most popular tourist destination. This vibrant place is perfect for unwinding and relaxing and experiencing the city’s culture and history. It is also conveniently located within walking distance of other popular attractions, like the Alamo, Rivercentre shops, Tower of the Americas and the Henry Gonzalez Convention Centre.
A Short History of River Walk:
Due to flooding in the early 1920s, the city decided to dam the river and in 1929 Robert Hugman designed the initial downtown River Walk and initial section was completed by 1941. The series of channels, canals and bridges were inspired by Venice. Set one level down the main city level, initial River Walk had about three miles of walkways and twenty bridges.
The River Walk has also inspired similar projects in other cities like Bricktown Canal in Oklahoma City and Santa Lucia River Walk in Monterry, Mexico.
Things to do:
We enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the River Walk along its shaded path, took as many photographs as we could, mingled with tourists from different countries and had Mexican beer at a lively bar. The River Walk is easily accessible to all, free of charge and has many ramps and elevators for people with mobility issues.
We highly recommend The River Boat Cruise, a 35-minute narrated boat ride at a cost of USD 12. Boats usually operate from 10 AM to 11 PM depending on the season. Also water taxi and shuttles are available.
Dining:
As evening approached, crowd swelled up and we hurried up to catch a table on the riverside of many lively bars and restaurants to have dinner with leisurely drink watching the world passing by. Casa Rio is the oldest restaurant serving authentic Mexican food which we enjoyed. Dirty Nelly is the Irish pub of hotel Hilton which remains open till 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays during season.
Esquire Tavern, Pearl Brewery, Iron Cactus, Boudro’s on the River walk are some popular restaurants to try. From pizzeria to Mexican, American to German, French, Irish cuisine will spoil you for choices at this vibrant magical place.
We also explored the Museum Reach section of the River walk featuring art installations.
Arneson River Theatre is a must visit zone for live performances in the evening and should not be missed.
2.The Alamo:
It would be a shame to visit San Antonio without visiting its most famous mission, as the city is also known as The Alamo City. Just a few blocks away from the River Walk, the Alamo is located close to Alamo Plaza.
Short History:
The Alamo was originally a Spanish Mission, founded in 1718.
In 1835, during the Texas Revolution, a group of Texan rebels including famous James Bowie and Davy Crockett occupied the Alamo to defend against Mexican army.
The Battle of the Alamo took place from 23rd February to 6th March 1836, in which defenders fought valiantly but were all defeated and killed by Mexican forces.
Thus The Battle of the Alamo became a symbol of Texan resistance.
Present Day:
The complex includes the Alamo Chapel, Long Barrack Museum and the gardens, and is open to visitors from 9 AM to 5-30 PM.
3.El Mercado:
Next day we made our first stop at El Mercado, also known as Historic Market Square, a vibrant Mexican market located in downtown San Antonio.
This iconic destination is full of cultural experience showcasing traditional Mexican art, cuisine and shopping.
We were lost in mazes of small locally owned shops and stalls selling authentic Mexican goods like handicrafts, leather products, potteries and dress materials.
The market also hosts live music and dance performances and vibrant street art.
Tourists can savour delicious Mexican cuisine in many popular restaurants and bars in the market.
Other Must-see attractions include:
Shops at Rivercenter, a large shopping mall with over 100 retailers, restaurant and IMAX theatre.
La Villita Historic Arts Village– a charming art community with shops and galleries.
The Pearl- an upscale neighbourhood with shops and restaurants.
Because of time constraint, we could not visit Sea World, a 416-acre marine mammal park, oceanarium and animal theme park located 17 miles away from the down town. The park is famous for many Roller Caoster rides, Orca (killer whale) encounter shows, Sea Lion and Otter Spotlight etc.Prices vary from USD 50 – 200/per person per day.
Overall, San Antonio is a city that seamlessly blends history, culture and entertainment, making it an unforgettable destination.
