Journey Starts:

Nice:

Our recent French Riviera trip was perfectly anchored in Nice, the Pearl of the French Riviera, where we immersed ourselves in the region’s breath taking grandeur and timeless  charm.

Nestled on the sun-kissed French Riviera, Nice, affectionately known as Nissa La Bella (Nice the Beautiful), is a treasure trove of history, art, and culture. With its stunning seafront promenades, charming Old Town, and vibrant cultural festivals, Nice is the perfect base for exploring the region. As the second-largest city on France’s Mediterranean coast, Nice boasts a rich heritage dating back 400,000 years, with a unique blend of Provençal charm and international flair. From its picturesque beaches to its world-class museums, Nice is a city that captivates your senses and leave you wanting more.

Nice has two large bays, the main expanse of the city stretches between the old Port of Nice and Nice Airport as a gentle curving bay. The smaller bay is an enclosed one where lies beautiful town Villefranche Sur Mer. The city rises from the flat beach area into gentle rising hills. We used to roam around different parts of the Riviera every day and come back at the pebbly beach just to sit and relax watching the waves roll by.

The Promenade des Anglais (Walkway of the English) is a promenade along the Bay of the Angels which is Mediterranean bay of Nice. It is truly unforgettable because of its stunning views, pleasant walks and vibrant atmosphere. You can stroll, sit or go to the beach for swim. The beach is pebbly and has private and public swimming enclosures and many restaurants. offering umbrellas, beds and excellent food and beverages. This iconic landmark makes it a highlight of any visit to Nice.

The Old Town of Nice:

Exploring the Old Town of Nice was like stepping into a charming labyrinth, with its narrow streets, historic buildings, and picturesque squares. The historic street, Rue Droite, with its Baroque-style churches along the way and the bustling Cours Saleya Market, filled with fresh local produce and specialties, were particularly memorable.

The French Riviera’s charm was on full display in Nice, where two iconic landmarks, Hotel Negresco and Massena Museum, stood out. The palatial Hotel Negresco, built in 1912, boasts a stunning pink dome, unique decorations, and the Michelin-starred Le Chantecler restaurant, as well as a private beach club. Adjacent to the hotel, Massena Museum is a beautiful beachfront mansion with a lovely garden, housing a collection of artifacts, including personal items of Napoleon.

Our hop-on hop-off bus tour took us to the bustling Port of Nice, where we marvelled at luxury yachts and boats. We strolled along the harbour, savouring lunch at a waterfront restaurant with breath taking views. Although we couldn’t book a boat ride due to sold-out tickets, the views of Baie des Anges and surrounding hills were unforgettable.

Next, we visited Villefranche-sur-Mer, a picturesque village hidden away on the Riviera. Its stunning bay and harbour, beautiful beaches, and coves made it a tranquil haven. From the citadel, we took in spectacular views of the village and admired the historic structure. As the evening unfolded, we enjoyed a refreshing swim and indulged in local delicacies at a seafront bar.

Relaxing on the beach at Nice, taking in the vastness of the Mediterranean, and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere made for unforgettable experiences to us.

Eze:

The next day, we embarked on a one-day French Riviera trip booked through the Viator app. Our cozy van, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide-cum-driver, comfortably accommodated our group of seven. Our first stop was the lovely little village of Èze, perched on a hilltop, offering breath taking views and a glimpse into the region’s medieval charm.

The enchanting village of Eze dates back to the Middle Ages, impressively clinging to the mountainside between Monaco and St Jean Cap Ferrat. Its narrow cobblestone streets, panoramic views of the Mediterranean, historic castle, art galleries, and charming shops make it a memorable destination. The medieval castle, though requiring a climb, offers magnificent views of the sea and a glimpse into the past through its ancient facade.

Eze’s Jardin Exotique, located at the top the village in the ruins of the castle, is not only a garden but provides a seamless bridge between nature and heritage. With its terraced landscapes, the garden showcases an excellent mix of colours and flora. Additionally, the famous Fragonard perfumery, included in our guided tour, offers a sensory experience, highlighting the art of perfumery.

Monte Carlo and Monaco:

Our next stop was the famous Monte Carlo, a 45-minute drive from Eze. Known globally for its iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo, luxury hotels, and high-stakes Formula One racing, Monte Carlo is a district within the Principality of Monaco, the second smallest country/sovereign state in the world.

Monaco’s history dates back to ancient times, with the Phoenicians establishing a settlement in the 6th century BC. Later, it was ruled by the Romans, and in the 13th century, the Grimaldi family took control. In 1861, Monaco became a sovereign state under French protection.

The country experienced significant growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by the construction of the Casino de Monte-Carlo and the development of luxury tourism. Today, Monaco is known for its stunning coastline, high standard of living, and events like the Monaco Grand Prix.

We drove along the famous Formula One racing circuit and strolled to the legendary Casino de Monte-Carlo, taking in the grandeur of its lavishly decorated interior, complete with intricate gold leaf, opulent chandeliers, beautiful paintings, and exquisite draperies.

After admiring the casino’s splendour, we explored the historic Monaco Cathedral and hurried to the Prince’s Palace to witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony, which takes place daily at 11:55 AM. Next, we visited the serene Japanese Garden and the picturesque Port Hercules, where luxury yachts and a bustling crowd added to the excitement. With our senses satiated by the sights and sounds of Monaco, we headed towards Cannes.

Cannes:

Cannes is indeed a luxurious city on the French Riviera, famous for hosting the prestigious Cannes Film Festival at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. This iconic event attracts celebrities and film enthusiasts worldwide. Beyond the film festival, Cannes also hosts other notable events like :
Festival d’Art Pyrotechnique: A fireworks festival showcasing stunning pyrotechnic displays
Midem: A trade show for the music industry, bringing together professionals and artists
Yachting Festivals: Celebrating luxury yachts and sailing, reflecting Cannes’ affinity for maritime elegance

The city’s appeal lies in its blend of glamour, cinematic excellence, and high-end lifestyle, making it a hub for international events and A-list celebrities. With its picturesque Old Town, luxury hotels, and stunning beaches, Cannes offers an unforgettable experience for visitors.

We cruised along La Croisette, a breath taking palm-lined promenade lined with luxury boutiques, fine dining establishments, and stunning sandy beaches. Next, we wandered into Le Suquet, the charming Old Town, where we savoured a delightful lunch at a quaint restaurant, surrounded by colourful houses and narrow streets. We couldn’t resist taking photos on the iconic red carpet of the Palais des Festivals, feeling like stars for a moment.

Afterward, we relaxed on the beautiful beach adjacent to the Palais, which was buzzing with activity as the team prepared for Les Plages Electroniques, a massive beach party for music lovers to be held between 8th to 10th August.. We were just five days too early to catch the event, but witnessing the preparations was thrilling nonetheless. The excitement in the air added to our Cannes experience, leaving us with unforgettable memories.

Antibes:

Antibes, a gem on the French Riviera, is a captivating destination nestled between Cannes and Nice. This enchanting coastal town seamlessly blends history, art, and relaxation, offering a unique experience. With its laid-back atmosphere, Antibes is an ideal getaway for those seeking a tranquil retreat. Founded as a Greek colony in the 4th century BCE, Antibes boasts:

– A historic old town with charming streets and architecture

– The 16th-century Fort Carré, a testament to its rich history

– Stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters

– Port Vauban, a world-renowned marina, and picturesque harbour

– The Picasso Museum, showcasing an impressive collection of the artist’s works.

We took 40 minutes to reach Antibes from Cannes and after a challenging parking hunt, we finally secured a spot near Port Vauban and entered its charming old town. Encircled by 16th-century ramparts, the old town exudes a sense of history and charm. We wandered through the narrow, cobblestone lanes, discovering art galleries, quaint cafes, and a vibrant local market offering fresh produce, flowers, and handmade crafts.

As we climbed the stairs to the ramparts, the breath taking views of the Mediterranean Sea, old town, and Port Vauban unfolded before us. We strolled along the ramparts, taking in the panoramic landscape and marvelling at the stunning vistas. .

Port Vauban, Antibes’ premier yachting marina, stands out as the largest in Europe, boasting over 2,000 moorings for yachts up to 160 meters in length. Dubbed “Billionaires’ Quay,” it’s a hub for luxury yachting, attracting high-end vessels and enthusiasts alike.

The Picasso Museum, housed in the medieval Château Grimaldi, is a major highlight. This renowned museum showcases an impressive collection of Pablo Picasso’s works, offering a glimpse into the artist’s creative genius. Open from 10 am to 6 pm (closed on Mondays), the museum welcomes visitors for an admission fee of €12 for adults.

Antibes’ blend of history, culture, and natural beauty really makes it a must-visit destination on any French Riviera itinerary.

Saint Paul de Vence:

The last stop for the day was a picturesque medieval village known as Saint-Paul-de-Vence, located 30 km away from Antibes. This charming village is renowned for its stunning views, artistic heritage, and rich history. As we wandered through its cobblestoned streets, we discovered its few Must-Visit Attractions:

Fondation Maeght: A modern and contemporary art museum showcasing works by artists like Calder, Miró, and Chagall, set amidst beautiful gardens.

La Colombe d’Or: A legendary hotel where famous artists like Picasso and Matisse stayed, featuring artwork donated by these artists.

Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs: A chapel decorated with murals by Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon.    – *Cimetière de Saint-Paul-de-Vence*: A cemetery offering exceptional views and the final resting place of Marc Chagall.

Saint-Paul-de-Vance is a haven for art lovers and those seeking a tranquil, picturesque getaway. The lovely village remains etched in memory for a long time.
