Discovering the Dramatic Splendour of Charyn Canyon & The Serene Beauty of Kolsay Lake

Date of travel: October 10, 2025

Imagine immersing yourself in Kazakhstan’s breath taking natural wonders! Charyn Canyon’s majestic Valley of Castles contrasts with Kolsay Lake’s crystal clear alpine waters, offering adventure and tranquility in the heart of the Tien Shan Mountains.

During our recent trip to Almaty, we embarked on a journey perfect for nature lovers and explorers seeking contrasts, as adventure echoes in Charyn’s gorges while peace whispers in Kolsay’s valleys.

Charyn Canyon:

Location and geographical highlights:

Charyn Canyon is nestled in the breath taking Tien Shan Mountains of south-eastern Kazakhstan, approximately 200 km east of Almaty. This stunning natural wonder stretches about 154 km along the Charyn River, showcasing dramatic landscapes carved by millions of years of wind and water erosion.

With a maximum depth of 300 meters, Charyn canyon may not match the scale of the world’s mightiest canyons, yet its accessibility to tourists and spectacular visual experiences render it as compelling as iconic destinations like the Grand Canyon of USA.

Certain geographical records and comparisons:

Β Yarlung Tsangpo Canyon at Tibet with length 504 km is often cited as *deepest* with *6,009 meters* max depth.

Greenland’s Grand Canyon with length of 750 km (discovered in 2013) has superseded Yarlung Tsangpo’s prior β€˜longest’ status.

Grand Canyon (Arizona,USA) with max depth of 1,857 meters is iconic but shallower than Yarlung Tsangpo.

However, Charyn’s accessibility contrasts with remote Yarlung Tsangpo, whereas Grand Canyon is iconic tourist hub.

Natural Beauty & Highlights:

Valley of Castles: The most iconic part of Charyn Canyon, featuring eerie rock formations resembling medieval castles.

Lunar (Yellow) Canyon: Part of Charyn National Park, known for its moon-like landscapes and yellow clay rocks.

Charyn River: Flows through the canyon, offering opportunities for rafting and serene walks along its banks.

Relic Ash Grove: Home to ancient Sogdian ash trees, a unique botanical treasure.

Things to Do:

Hiking: Explore trails like the 3 km path through the Valley of Castles; unofficial trails offer adventurous exploration.

Rafting: Experience the Charyn River’s rapids with guided tours.

Wildlife Watching: Spot foxes, eagles, pheasants, and other species amid diverse ecosystems.

Camping: Designated spots available (350 Tenge extra); yurts/bungalows at the Eco Park.

Our Journey to Charyn Canyon:

We embarked on a small private group tour from Almaty at 7 am, and as we crossed the city limits, breath taking natural sights unfolded before our eyes. The endless green steppes stretched out, with the majestic snow-capped Tien Shan mountain ranges visible on the horizon. As we drove, the towering mountains grew larger, and after over three hours, we reached Charyn Canyon National Park. The sheer drop of the gorge left us awestruck, and the dramatic change in scenery was spellbinding.

Charyn canyon consists of five different canyons: the Valley of Castles (most popular part), the Temirlik Canyon, the YellowΒ or Moon Canyon, the Red Canyon and Bestamak Canyon. Though each of them offers breath taking sceneries, only Valley of Castles and Yellow Canyon are accessible to common tourists and other ones can be reached via marked or unmarked hiking trails, however no proper facilities or guidance is available.

Exploring the Valley of Castles:

We parked near the visitor centre and explored options to visit the canyon. We could walk along the cliff, enjoying the majestic red-coloured gorges and mountains (suitable for people with mobility issues), or climb down 240 steps to the valley. As we descended, feelings of closeness with nature engulfed us. The 3 km walking trail, the only marked trail in the canyon, was mostly flat, though dusty, and took us through strange, spectacular rock formations. The fairy-tale-like structures filled us with wonder and adventure.

Geological Marvel:

Years of wind, sun, and water erosion have carved the canyon’s fantastic rocky formations. We observed blackish-dark rock formations at the base, formed from volcanic lava millions of years ago, relatively younger reddish-brown rocks above, and youngest yellowish gravels at the surface.

A Dream Fulfilled:

Having visited the Grand Canyon West from Las Vegas a few months prior, I was inspired to explore Charyn Canyon’s dreamy valleys. Strolling along this dramatic canyon was a dream come true and we realised why this canyon is aptly called β€œThe Mini Grand Canyon”. The gentle walk took 45-50 minutes, with waiting places and toilets along the way. We also had the option to take a marshrutka vehicle from the staircase zone to the river source and vice versa at the cost of 800 KZT (Tenge) one way.

Serenity by the Charyn River:

After a delightful walk, we arrived at the tranquil banks of the Charyn River which offered a tranquil oasis amidst the arid mountain landscape. Sitting by the river, we were serenaded by the gentle flow of water and the sweet chirping of birds. This peaceful ambiance was the perfect spot to unwind and recharge. We spent a blissful half hour soaking in the beauty of nature before boarding a marshrutka back to the staircase and climbed up to the visitor centre.

Essential Tips for Visitors:

Carry essentials: Water bottle, small umbrella, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and snack packets.

Be prepared for basic facilities: Toilets are drop-down types without water or toilet paper, and they can be unpleasant.

Plan ahead: No restaurants or drinking water sources are available in the valley.

Staircase: Climbing down 240 steps may be easy but climbing up is not. So it is better to walk towards the river valley while enjoying the magnificent canyon and to catch the vehicle on return journey so that stamina is preserved for climbing up.

Black Canyon: A Natural Marvel:

Our next stop was the breath taking Black Canyon viewpoint (not to be confused with famous Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park, Colorado, USA) within the Charyn Canyon complex. Located 26 km from the visitor centre, the 30-minute drive was well worth it. The panoramic view point offered stunning vistas of dramatic blackish and reddish rock formations, with the serene Charyn River flowing through them.

Key Highlights:

Multiple Viewpoints: Take in the breath taking views from various angles.

Scenic River Views: Witness the Charyn River as it winds its way through the canyon.

Mini Mart: A small convenience store offers essential snacks, drinks, and water.

Important Safety Tip:

Caution at Cliff Edges: Be extremely cautious when near the cliff edges, as they can be slippery and pose a significant risk.

Kolsay Lake:

Last destination of the day was Kolsay Lake, also known as Kolsai Lake, a stunning location in Kazakhstan’s Tian Shan mountains. It’s actually a system of three lakes, often called the “Pearls of the Northern Tien Shan”. The lakes are surrounded by lush forests, meadows, and towering mountains, offering breath taking views and opportunities for outdoor activities.

We arrived at Kolsay lake after an hour-long drive from Black canyon viewpoint. We parked the vehicle at parking lot where lots of restaurants offering various cuisines were available. It was a downhill walk towards the lake and stunning visuals mesmerised us as we reached the lake site. Beautiful sunny day coupled with moderate climate was a boon as we strolled and took multiple pictures. We enjoyed excellent Kazakh cuisine and savoured local cognac at an elegant lakeside restaurant. A sudden change of climate surprised us as we came out of the restaurant. Cold wind coupled with torrential rains took us completely off guard.

However, weather God smiled again after one hour and we could walk uphill towards the car parking zone.

Excellent narrative. I took some time to read this time. That made it more attractive. You mentioned about Kazakh cuisine which I am told very good but did not give details. Please add the same to meet interest of gastronomes like me. The photos are really good.
