Golling Waterfall:

After exploring St. Gilgen and Schafberg mountain during our Salzkammergut trip we decided to explore majestic Golling waterfall and serene Bluntautal lake on our way to Hallstatt.

Golling town (known as Golling an der Salzach) is about 30 km south of Salzburg and it hosts Austria’s largest waterfall which plunges 75 meters down in two different stages. (highest waterfall of Austria is Krimmi Waterfalls).

The roaring waterfall is one of the most attractive destinations in the province along with picturesque Bluntautal valley.

It was 40-minute drive from Salzburg to Golling. We paid 5 Euro parking fee and 5 Euro entry fee at the entrance, we started walking in the woods. The path was narrow, uneven but guard rail was present most of the route. Fabulous forest and refreshingly natural pathway made non hikers like us also very comfortable.

About 20 minutes of climbing took us to the base of the lower fall. The drop was powerful and romantic, spectacular and idyllic.

Golling waterfall is created by water coming from a cave Schwarzbachfall Hohle situated just above the waterfall. The upper part is 45 meters high and lower part is 30 meters high.

We did not go to the top as the hike was little steeper and would have taken additional 25 minutes. However, there are stairs to climb to view the source of the fall.

While descending we relaxed ourselves on the benches kept along the way and soaked in the beautiful scenic landscapes. There was a coffee house near the entrance where we had coffee and hot chocolate. It was really a fun filled pleasant morning experience for us.

Bluntautal Lake:

Our next destination was the stunning Bluntautal valley and serene Bluntautal lake (Bluntauseen). This protected landscape conservation area is a popular spot for relaxation and
rejuvenation.

From the waterfall we drove towards Golling an der Salzach town then followed signs to Bluntautal. It took us 15 minutes to reach the parking area. There was a parking fee of 2 Euros but the valley had well maintained paths and picturesque walking trails. Surrounding mountains and trees created a majestic backdrop in the valley.

A short walk led us to the serene lake Bluntauseen. A circular walking trail surrounding the lake was perfect for photography and nature appreciation. Well-appointed benches by the lake invited us to pause and relax. Fish and ducks were playing in the clear water, making it such an enchanting spot. We were mesmerised by the reflections of the high mountains in the crystal clear water like a mirror.

We also spotted few locals busy in fishing and few others enjoying picnic basket with families and friends.

There are other waterfalls known as Blantau and Torrener waterfalls at a 10 and 15-minute driving distance respectively but we did not visit as we were short of time.

The Bluntautal valley and lake offered a tranquil and awe-inspiring experience, making it a memorable stop on our journey to Hallstatt.
