Mykonos

Date of travel: Apr 14, 2023

Daytime Delights:
Mykonos is synonymous with most vibrant nightlife in Greece, but my focus will be on exploring the island’s daytime attractions.

Introduction to Greek Islands:
Greece is home to nearly 6,000 islands, with around 200 inhabited. Other than two large islands Crete and Euboea, all major islands are clustered in six major groups namely Ionian islands, Saronic islands, Cyclades, Sporades, Dodecanese and North Aegean Islands.

Introduction to Mykonos:
Mykonos, the “Queen of the Cyclades”, is not only famous for its vivid nightlife but also has stunning beaches, beautiful promenade, and welcoming restaurants. Located approximately 150 km from Athens, the island spans 85 sq. km and is also known as “The Island of the Winds” due to its strong breezes.

History and Mythology:
Mykonos has been inhabited since the 11th century BCE, with mythology attributing its name to Mykonos, the grandson of Apollo.

Our Experience and Major Attractions:

Day 1
We arrived on the island by afternoon ferry from Santorini and headed to our hotel in Mykonos Town (Chora) situated on the west coast. The principal town is called Chora in Greece, if name of the town and name of the island are same.

We strolled along charming streets and labyrinthine alleys of Chora, admiring its beautiful whitewashed buildings and elegant shops. Our first stop was Municipal library on Ayia Kyriaki Square of the main town. The library features an astonishing collections of old Cycladic coins, seals and photographs.

Later we visited “Little Venice” famous for its rows of fishing houses lining the waterfront with their balconies hanging over the sea. Constructed in 18th century many of these houses are now converted into cafes, bars and shops.

We took a vantage spot at this romantic location and watched spectacular sunset over the picturesque coastline. Lovely beautiful evening descended and we headed towards a happening beach bar.

Day 2:
The day was reserved for beach hopping and we headed towards Paradise beach. The island boasts of many unique beaches and they can be buzzy or secluded, sandy or pebbly but invariably feature clear azure or deep blue waters for snorkelling, swimming, paddle boating etc.

Paradise, Super paradise, Elia and Ornos are most famous and elegant beaches and are favourite among celebrities or young crowds. Restaurants, beach bars, seaside accommodation and water sports centres invite all kinds of tourists and partygoers.

Great local cuisine and vibrant music played by famous DJs are common features everywhere.  Partying till late evening we headed to Chora because nightlife begins there after 12 mid-night.

Day 3:
We missed our breakfast because we had slept at 6 in the morning. After a late start, we visited Archaeological museum and then took a short boat cruise in the harbour and admired the stunning coastline views.

We visited famous Paraportiani Church (The Church of Our Lady). The Church was named so because it was located next to the entrance of an ancient castle.

Next stop was famous Windmills, landmark of Mykonos. Built by Venetians in the 16th century they are an iconic features of Mykonos 16 of them are situated around the island of which seven are positioned on the famous landmark hill in Chora.

We also spotted ‘Camel Rock’, a unique rock formation off the coast near the windmills. Later we refreshed ourselves by cool breeze on the promenade and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

A great dinner at a lovely beachside restaurant was an excellent experience and overall charm of the island left a lasting impression making it one of my most memorable journeys.
