I must have visited Goa more than 50 times, but discovered this panoramic destination only last year.
Located in the picturesque Canacona district of South Goa, Cabo de Rama Fort and Beach are two of the most stunning attractions of this region of lush greenery and relaxed vibe.
Major Attractions:
We were holidaying in a beautiful resort at Cavelossim beach, when a local taxi driver mentioned about beautiful sunset point of Cabo de Rama and we opted for the trip immediately. After about a drive for 45 minutes through scenic serpentine roads surrounded by light forest area we reached our desired destination.
Cabo de Rama fort:
Though in ruins, the fort offers stunning views of the Arabian Sea and surrounding coastline. It has no entry fee and is open till 5-30 pm.
The fort has a fascinating history and is named after Lord Rama and legend tells that he stayed here during his exile.
However, exact construction date is not clearly documented and probably it was built by the local Soonda dynasty and later came under Portuguese control in 17th century. As the fort is situated on a cliff, Portuguese people made it an important defence zone and its bastions and ramparts are still there.
Sunset is truly a magical experience from the top of the fort and also from multiple locations on the rugged cliff that surrounds it.
However, place is not wheelchair friendly and senior citizens should be very careful while walking inside the fort.
I should also mention that a chapel dedicated to St Anthony is still standing inside the fort.
Cabo de Rama beach:
A relatively untouched beach that is secluded and located between the fort on one side and rocky cliff on the other. Its pristine beauty and tranquil vibe make it a perfect spot for relaxation. The beach is surrounded by rocky cliffs and palm trees, has clear water and very less crowd.
Its soft sand and lovely water make it ideal for swimming, snorkelling and rejuvenation. A few shacks are also there offering Local cuisine and sunset is magnificent here. However, beach becomes little lonely after evening and no activities are there at night.
Nearby Attractions and accommodation:
Multiple restaurants and hotels are situated above the cliff which offer breath taking views of the sea and the beach while you dine out there. Without any prejudice two of them need to be mentioned here.
The Cape Goa is a luxury resort situated on the cliff near sunset point and has rooms and restaurant offering amazing view of the sea.
Obrigado by Craftels: Similar style and a lovely restaurant. Both of them have direct beach access and parking facilities.
However, I am not sure if they have elevator or lift for patrons with limited mobility because I have not stayed there but dined and enjoyed their delicious local dishes. Other hotels like Red crab resort or Grace Exotica are also very good.
When to Visit:
Best time to visit Goa is always between September and middle of March. Rainy season should be avoided if you are water sport enthusiast.
How to Reach:
By Air:
Dabolim airport is 54 Kms away and North Goa (MOPA) airport is 80 kms away. From airport you need to hire a taxi or private cab or rent a car and drive.
By Train:
Margao station is 30 kms away.
By Road:
Taxi (fixed rate) or rental car. No Uber or Ola service available in Goa.
Nearby beaches are Palolem (45 Kms), Agonda (20 Kms), Cavelossim (30 Kms) and Cola beach (10-12 Kms).
Local Cuisine:
Goa has two distinctly different but delicious cuisine:
Konkani type cuisine: fried fish, seafood curries, kokum juice and chicken preparations.
Portuguese influenced cuisine: Vindaloo, Cafreal, sorpotel, bebinca, dodol etc
Overall a fantastic place for short or long stay for relaxation, rejuvenation or gastronomic
adventure.
